PS An earlier draft had footnotes, but formatting for the journal meant no footnotes. So here they are...

For example, during a group discussion at a seminar on ‘3D Virtual World and Social Learning’ (conveners: C.S Ang, D. White, S. Warburton, P. Edirisingha and P. Zaphiris. Funder: EMERGE JISC) at City University, London in March 2009, access and disability were identified as issues by a majority participants. These issues were discussed in relation to tools and compliance. The following comments were logged at an education event in SL.
‘Is it accessible (in terms of Disability Act)?’
‘There is a great deal going on with groups in here that are otherwise isolated and cut off from social interaction...’
‘Is it important to make SL accessible? Will using SL improve life of disabled users?’
‘I think it might be a requirement to make it accessible [if using it for education]’
Blogs where these issues have been discussed include the SL Education Blog: http://www.sl-educationblog.org/?p=274

If space permitted, it would be interesting to explore the apparent schism between Disability Studies and accessibility and e-learning literature with reference to Seale’s discussion of ‘participation’ and ‘reification’ (Seale, 2004 - refering to Wenger's work) or Hine’s account of the necessity of conceptualizing the Internet as both culture, and artifact (Hine, 2000).

Thanks for reading Treasure, and for your help.
I will make sure that a clarification of this kind is inserted into the final draft of the paper.

Very nice, Jelly. Enjoyed reading the draft, and look forward to future entries. I enjoyed interviewing with you, and can only hope my 'insider's insight' provided something of interest for you. I would like to clarify, that while I am not strongly impacted by voice on SL, I do understand the other interviewees points. The D/deaf community has always been my major interest/involvement on SL, and with my commitment to Virtual Ability, Inc, that interest has expanded to disabilities of all kinds. If I had been involved with others, who migrated to voice when it became available, I am quite sure I would feel more as they do. Standing around, socially isolated while people chat around you in voice is at the very least uncomfortable. Exclusion is rarely fun, and I realize that I am somewhat insulated, inside of my chosen 'place to be' on SL. I require that 'home point', 'comfort zone, where I can take a deep breath and say 'whew'. I never apologize for the hearing loss, or my preference not to use voice. It's part of me, and with a high level of confidence, I think that if someone takes the time, I am worth the time it takes. Thanks again for sharing your draft.

Thanks for sharing the link to this article. I particularly liked the idea of conceptualising immersion and engagement as different states and the implication this might have for the design of learning activities in virtual worlds. The reference to presence was a bonus for me as I grapple with what the concept of social presence.
