One of the contributors to the discussion at Terra Nova that I mentioned yesterday (about the introduction of voice to virtual worlds) was Dmitri Williams. He has now added information about a journal article published in Human Communication Research. Here is the post. During his research Williams found that (to quote from the abstract) “Quantitative results suggest increases in liking and trust due to the addition of voice, as well as insulation from unexpected negative impacts of text-only play”. Needless to say, the implications (in relation to ‘normal’ communication, liking and trust) are a wee bit depressing. I look forward to reading the article. Maybe it will cheer me up.
